Hello all,

I am relatively new to the business. I own a company with ~120 pools. When hiring new employees, I would really like to know who exactly I am sending onto my client properties. I am wondering how many owners out there do background checks on potential new employees?  Also, what sites or companies are you using to do the background checks? Besides driving record and obvious violent crimes, what red flags should I look for?

Of the many companies I’ve spoken with, many will say they run a background check, but most don’t actually follow-through.

For us, the very last step in our interview process is a background check on any new hire. We check references before we get here, and have a couple interviews, because background check services are not cheap. We use Checkr, it’s $99/person for the package we typically purchase, and it includes:

  • County Criminal Search (Last 7 Years)
  • Federal Criminal Search (Last 10 Years)
  • Global Watchlist Search
  • National Criminal Search
  • S** Offender Search
  • SSN trace
  • State Criminal Search (Last 7 Years)
  • Motor Vehicle Report

Is it overkill? Probably. But we service many affluent homes, commercial properties, etc. it’s a strong part of our differentiation in our sales pitch.

Hopefully that helps!

Thanks, this helps!  We service many affluent homes as well. I don’t want just anybody representing my company on these properties. I understand not placing a sex offender on a client’s property once a week, but where do I draw the line for hiring?… for instance, is a past felony acceptable?  I understand a felony doesn't necessarily mean they are a bad person or a bad worker. Is it more of a subjective gut feeling after the interview?  Thanks
