In talking with pool pros, I noticed there can be some eye rolling when it comes to Quickbooks and bookkeeping in general. Is this true for you? If yes, I’d love to learn what your biggest frustrations are when it comes to using QuickBooks. Would you mind taking a minute to respond to the poll below?

I’ll use your feedback to share the top three challenges in a future post, along with specific resources to address those challenges directly, once several people have taken the poll.

Thanks in advance!

What’s your biggest challenges when it comes to using QuickBooks?

I push Skimmer to Quickbooks and invoice from there, because I pre-bill weekly service, metal out and filter cleans.     I charge sales tax based on my office location.  When it gets pushed to Quickbooks, the sales tax rate is changed to the rate of where the client is, which is not always the same as our office.  Quickbooks says it’s a Skimmer problem and Skimmer says it’s a Quickbooks problem.    Is anyone else having this problem?

Carrie

Hi @Carrielola, we're sorry you are encountering some issues. However, this issue is indeed coming from QBO's automated tax settings. Please reach out to us at support@getskimmer.com or call us on (480) 718 - 2158. We’ll be happy to connect with you for more clarification. Thank you!

Hi Carrie,

Happy to help with your question.

I messaged you privately, but I’m answering here as well in case someone else is having the same issue.

I think the standard rule is charging sales tax based on where the service is provided, but it may be different where you provide service. Here’s a resource that I find helpful: Sales Tax Institute

Without actually seeing your QuickBooks account, I'm guessing what I think may be the issue.

Since you are choosing to apply the same sales tax rate based on your office location, my guess is that you have each customer's tax rate in QuickBooks set to "based on location," therefore, QuickBooks is "correcting" your invoices with the tax rate based on the physical address of the customer.

In order to stop the autocorrection, try the following steps:

  1. Set up custom Sales Tax rates that are identical to what you set up in Skimmer.
  2. Edit each customer's sales tax rate in QuickBooks to the tax rate that you want to use.

Here’s a video to show you how to make the changes. I demonstrate how to use three tax rates, but if choosing to only use one, you would only create one custom sales tax rate and manually apply it to each customer as shown in the video.

Hope that helps. Again, I’m guessing based on what you shared.

If I didn’t understand your question correctly, don’t hesitate to reach out again.
