Memorial Day is just around the corner. Is this one of your days off? I am often asked if you should take these significant holidays off. It depends.

If your Mondays are light, you can easily make up the pools during the week. Or if you want to skip the pools entirely, you can, but then you will use up one of your days on your four weeks off. How does a Pool Pro take four weeks off each year? It's simple. There are months when there are five service weeks, and you charge monthly for four weeks. May 2024 has 5 Wednesdays, 5 Thursdays, and 5 Fridays.

You explain to the customer that you don't charge extra for the 5th week during these months, which adds up to 4 weeks off for your company. I usually take two straight weeks off during the year and then use the other two weeks for random times. To avoid conflicts, have this written in your service agreement:

"Sick Day/Vacation Policy: In case of a sick day or injury, we will do our best to make up the service day for you. If we cannot make up the service day, note that since you are billed monthly, you receive at least four extra free service days per year. We will make these up as either sick days or vacation days on our end."

YES. I have explained this to every pool guy I ever run into.  Either take the time off, or bill for the extra visits.  I take a week off each quarter, opting to not take Thanksgiving day off (just spread those Thursday pools over the other days).

We have a week off for both Thanksgiving and Christmas & then we have bad weather & hurricane days that shut us down.

The only downfall, if a customer ends service in the “winter” we don’t get to make up those 5wks.

This past weekend we decided our crew and us deserved a break, they have been working 12+ hrs a day due to recent storms in our area. I think time off is a necessary reset for everyone!

Same. We take Thanksgiving week, Christmas week, a week in January and a week in February. The way it all fell, we worked New Years Day this year, but we survived.

Anyone else have this written in your service agreements? If so, do you care to share the verbiage? I know some that are taking two weeks off and servicing on the other two weeks pro-bono.

Sick Day/Vacation Policy: In the event of a sick day or injury we will do our best to make up the service day for you. If we are unable to make up the service day note that since you are billed monthly there are at least 4 extra free service days per year that you receive. These will be made up by us as either sick days or vacation days on our end.

This is my verbiage:

Note: As there are four months each year that contain an unbilled fifth week, Bluefish Pool Service reserves the right to skip up to four weeks of service per year for vacations, holidays, and/or sick days. Advance notice will be provided whenever possible.
