For pool service technicians, proper footwear is crucial for safety, comfort, and durability in wet and often slippery environments. Here’s a breakdown of the best footwear features and specific types to consider:

✅ Essential Footwear Features

  1. Slip-Resistant Soles

    • Reduces risk of falls on wet surfaces (poolsides, decks, tile, etc.)

  2. Waterproof or Quick-Drying Materials

    • Prevents soggy, heavy shoes and avoids skin issues from prolonged moisture.

  3. Closed-Toe Protection

    • Protects feet from pool chemicals, equipment, and accidental impacts.

  4. Breathability

    • Keeps feet cooler and helps with odor control.

  5. Good Arch Support & Cushioning

    • Important for techs on their feet most of the day.

  6. Durability

    • Shoes need to hold up to chemicals like chlorine and general wear-and-tear

👟 Recommended Footwear Types

1. Water Shoes (High-Quality)

  • Best for short visits or light-duty work.

  • Brands: Merrell Hydro Moc, Body Glove 3T Barefoot, Speedo Surfwalker Pro

2. Work Boots with Waterproofing

  • Best for all-day jobs and heavy equipment handling.

  • Look for lightweight, breathable waterproof boots.

  • Brands: Keen Utility, Timberland PRO, Wolverine Overpass

3. Slip-Resistant Sneakers / Work Shoes

  • Great balance of safety and comfort.

  • Brands: Skechers Work (with slip-resistant outsoles), Crocs On-the-Clock, Mozo Work Shoes

⚠️ Avoid:

  • Flip-flops or sandals (unsafe, no toe protection)

  • Canvas shoes (absorb water, hard to clean)

  • Heavy-duty leather boots unless waterproof and chemical-resistant

  • Rubber Clogs or Slip-Ons (Water-Resistant)

    • Brands: Crocs Bistro Pro, Dansko XP 2.0 (water-resistant models)

I’m posting this in our company WhatsApp. Even though it’s in our handbook about proper footwear, when I do random stops on techs sometimes I see crocs and sandals. It pisses me off to the surface of the sun and back I get so heated lol.

Love this post. Don’t think this is talked about enough, made slip resistant soles mandatory. Mostly from being stupid early on and bruising my ribs falling in with worn out soles :(
