What are some good interview questions we can ask to find the right personality to match our business mission?

Any tips on how to select the right applicant to join our team?

Thanks so much for you questions! For starters, I want to acknowledge that you have a business mission AND that you are thinking about the interview process and questions to ask so that you hire people who are a good fit for your business and work culture. Way to go! Come up with a couple of questions that center around your business mission.

For example (the mission I’m using in this example is completely made up)  if your business mission was to “Create meaningful connections.”  In the interview process you could say, “Our mission is to creating meaningful connections with customers, clients and vendors, Can you share what this means to you?” Then you could ask, “Can you share about a time when you created meaningful connections in your life (at work or in your personal life) and what that was like for you?” And then you could share and explain what creating meaningful connections means for you and your employees. ESPECIALLY share with them WHY this matters and makes a difference.

And then  pay attention to HOW they respond. Are they emotionally connected with their response, does it fire them up? Do their eyes light up?  You are looking for someone who is already in ALIGNMENT with your culture. You can always train for skills, but company culture is something you really want to hire for, and ensure that they resonate with it in advance. This will save you a lot of effort and frustration in the long run.  Long answer, please let me know if that resonates and helps!  : )

Yes! Thank you! We will try it at our next interview!

Awesome, keep me posted and let me know how it goes! Also, make sure to create a system out of it and add it to your list of interview questions - for all positions so that you (and anyone else involved in the interview process) are consistently asking the same questions around mission.
